Follow these simple steps for measuring windows for best results:
Measure Your Glass
Measure the glass area where you want to install the film. Repeat this for each window and make sure you write these measurements down in a clear manner that will not be confusing later, especially if there are many windows involved.
Measuring a Straight Window
Most windows have straight sides, making them easy to measure. First measure the glass from left to right to obtain the width. Next measure the glass from top to bottom to get the length.
Measuring a Round Window
You will need to order a rectangular piece of smart film and then cut the circle out of it. Measure the full width and length of the circle. If the circle is symmetrical, these measurements should be the same and can be cut from a square.
Measuring Odd-Shaped Windows
Curved windows include arch windows, half-moon windows, triangular glass and other unique designs. As with circular windows, you will need to order a rectangular piece of film that covers the entire window. To do this, measure the width and height at the widest portions of the glass.
Measuring Curved Glass
For windows that are curved such as yacht windows or bay windows, use a flexible measuring tape that can follow the curvature of the glass and measure the length and width. Please consult with us for advice specific to your curved glass project.
Important Tips for Measuring Windows for Smart Film
We are not responsible for our customer’s measurement errors, but can help prevent you from making them:
- Laser measurement is best. If unavailable, use a long, flexible, tape measure.
- Ask someone to help you, especially if the windows are large.
- Write all the measurements in a notebook, not loose pieces of paper that can easily get lost. If there are multiple windows, label each drawing and measurement carefully and clearly to avoid misinterpretation.
- Measure each glass pane separately. Sometimes windows and doors that appear to be the same size actually have small differences.
- Check windows for any cracks or defects and replace them before ordering smart film. Applying a window film to a damaged window may cause the crack to lengthen as the window contracts and expands with temperature changes.
- Double check all measurements and calculations prior to submitting them.
